What Scope Applies to Custom Metrics?

Answer: Hit

On the Google Analytics exam, you’ll likely be asked, “What scope applies to Custom Metrics?” A typical question will be formulated like the one below:

  • Event

  • Session

  • User

  • Hit

The correct answer is Hit.

Custom Metrics, just like Custom Dimensions, can have various scopes. According to Google, “Scope determines which hits will be associated with a particular custom-dimension value.” The four answers above are the four levels of scope.

Custom Dimensions with hit-level scope will only apply its value to the hit with which the value was set. In the same vein, Custom Dimensions with product-level scope will only apply value to the product with which the value was set.

Session-level scope works a bit differently. If two values with session scope have the same index in a single session, the final value set will apply to all hits in the session.

Finally, as far as user-level scope, two custom dimension values set in the same session will allow the last value set to take precedence and be applied to future sessions.
